Turritella Agate
Physical Information
Turritella Agate is a fossil agate from Wyoming, USA. It is a dark brown to black stone full of small, pale spiral shells. The shells belong to freshwater snails that lived in ancient lakes around 50 million years ago. Over time, silica slowly replaced the shells and the mud around them, turning everything into agate.
The name is a little misleading. Turritella is a sea snail, but the fossils in this stone are freshwater snails of a different kind. The old trade name simply stayed. Turritella Agate is hard and durable (about 6.5–7 on the Mohs scale) and takes a beautiful polish, so it is popular for palm stones, cabochons and small slabs.
