Red Amethyst (Thunder Bay)
Thunder Bay amethyst comes from Ontario, Canada, along the north shore of Lake Superior. The red color of the surrounding rock is caused by hematite (iron oxide) present in the host rock. These amethyst deposits formed around 1.1 billion years ago during volcanic activity associated with the Midcontinent Rift. Thunder Bay amethyst is the official gemstone of Ontario.
