Tourmaline
Physical Information
Tourmaline is not a single mineral but a family of boron silicate minerals. It forms long, prism-shaped crystals with fine lines (striations) running along their length, and it comes in more colours than almost any other gemstone: black, green, pink, red, blue, brown and even several colours in one crystal, as in watermelon tourmaline.
The most common and best known form is Black Tourmaline (Schorl), which gets its deep black colour from iron. Tourmaline has a hardness of 7–7.5, so it is durable for everyday use. It also has a rare physical property: when it is warmed or put under pressure, it becomes electrically charged and can attract light particles such as dust or ash. Important sources include Brazil, Madagascar, Namibia, Pakistan and Morocco.
Metaphysical Properties
Black Tourmaline is known as one of the strongest protection stones. It is believed to absorb and shield against negative energy, help you feel safe and grounded, and clear heavy or anxious thoughts. Many people keep it by the front door, on their desk or near electronic devices, or carry it with them in busy places.
It is associated with the root chakra. Coloured tourmalines carry their own meanings – pink with love and the heart, green with growth and vitality – while black tourmaline pairs well with stronger, high-energy stones such as Moldavite to keep you grounded.
