Tree Agate is a type of dendritic chalcedony, a fine-grained form of quartz. It has a white or milky base with green, branching patterns that look like small trees, moss or ferns. These patterns are called dendrites. They form when mineral-rich water carries iron or manganese into tiny cracks in the stone.
No two pieces look the same, which makes Tree Agate a favourite for tumbled stones, palm stones and carvings. It is hard and durable (about 6.5–7 on the Mohs scale), so it is easy to care for. Most Tree Agate on the market comes from India.
