Topaz

Physical Information

Topaz is an aluminium silicate mineral that contains fluorine. It forms clear, often large crystals in granite pegmatites and in cavities in volcanic rock. Natural topaz is most often colourless, pale blue, yellow or golden brown. Rarer colours include pink, orange and red. The golden-orange to pinkish imperial topaz is the most valued variety.

Important sources include Brazil, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nigeria and Russia. With a hardness of 8 on the Mohs scale, topaz is one of the hardest gemstones, but it can split if it gets a hard knock. Please note that almost all strong blue topaz on the market, such as "Swiss blue" or "London blue", is colourless topaz that has been irradiated and heated to create its colour. This is a common, stable and safe treatment.

Topaz is known as a stone of clarity and joy. It is believed to support focus, clear thinking and honest communication, and to help people set goals and move towards them with confidence. Many people also use it to let go of self-doubt and invite a more positive outlook.
