Sunstone
Physical Information
Sunstone is a feldspar mineral with a warm, sparkling glow. This glitter effect is called aventurescence. It comes from tiny, flat inclusions of hematite, goethite or, in some cases, copper, which reflect the light like small mirrors. Its colours range from peach and orange to gold, red and sometimes green, depending on the type and amount of inclusions.
Sunstone is found in several countries, including India, Norway, Tanzania and the United States. Oregon sunstone, which contains natural copper, is especially known for its strong shimmer and colour flashes. With a hardness of about 6–6.5 on the Mohs scale, sunstone is suitable for jewellery and carvings. Please note that goldstone, a man-made glass with copper glitter, is sometimes sold as sunstone. Natural sunstone has a softer, less even sparkle.
Metaphysical Properties
Sunstone is known as a stone of joy and personal power. Like the sun, it is believed to bring warmth, optimism and fresh energy. Many people use it to overcome fear and self-doubt, lift a heavy mood and find their enthusiasm for life again.
Sunstone is associated with the sacral chakra and the solar plexus chakra, which are linked to creativity, confidence and self-worth. Many people wear it on grey winter days, or keep it close when they need courage to lead, create or simply shine as themselves.
