Sugilite
Physical Information
Sugilite is a rare silicate mineral known for its rich purple colour, from soft lavender to deep royal purple and magenta. The colour comes from manganese. Sugilite usually forms in massive, opaque pieces, sometimes with black manganese veins or pink areas. The finest, slightly translucent material is especially valued.
It was first found in Japan in 1944 and was later named after the Japanese geologist Ken-ichi Sugi. Today almost all sugilite on the market comes from South Africa. With a hardness of about 6–6.5 on the Mohs scale, it is suitable for jewellery and carvings. Because good material is rare, sugilite is one of the more precious purple stones. Clean it with mild soapy water and a soft cloth.

Sugilite is known as a stone of spiritual love and protection. It is believed to bring comfort in difficult times, help people release heavy feelings, and encourage self-acceptance and inner peace. It is especially popular with sensitive people who feel easily affected by the moods of others.
With its deep purple colour, sugilite is associated with the crown chakra and the third eye chakra, which are linked to intuition and spiritual awareness. Many people hold it during meditation, or keep it close when they want to feel protected, calm and connected to their inner wisdom.
