Smoky Quartz

Physical Information

Smoky quartz is a brown to grey variety of quartz. Its colour can be light and see-through or so dark that it looks almost black; very dark smoky quartz is called morion. The smoky colour forms over a very long time, when natural radiation from the surrounding rock acts on tiny amounts of aluminium in the crystal. It often grows as large, well-shaped crystals in granite pegmatites and in alpine rock clefts.

Well-known sources include Brazil, Madagascar, Switzerland and Scotland, where it is called cairngorm. With a hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale, it is durable and easy to care for. Please note that some very dark, evenly coloured smoky quartz on the market is clear quartz that has been artificially irradiated. It is safe, but it is not natural in colour.

Smoky quartz is known as a stone of grounding and protection. It is believed to absorb negative energy, ease stress and bring a calm, steady state of mind. Many people use it to let go of old patterns and fears, and to stay focused and practical during difficult times.

It is associated with the root chakra, which is linked to safety, stability and a strong connection to the Earth. Many people keep smoky quartz near the front door or on their desk, or hold it after a busy day when they want to release tension and feel centred again.
