Shungite
Physical Information
Shungite is a black, carbon-rich rock from the Karelia region in north-west Russia. It is very old, formed about two billion years ago from ancient organic material. Scientists are interested in it because it contains small amounts of fullerenes, special ball-shaped carbon molecules that are rare in nature.
Regular shungite is matte black and is often shaped into spheres, pyramids, plates and beads. The rarer elite or noble shungite has a very high carbon content and a shiny, silvery-black surface. It is found only as rough pieces, because it is too brittle to carve. Shungite is light and fairly soft, and the matte type can leave black marks on hands or paper. Keep it dry and wipe it with a soft cloth.

Shungite is known as a stone of protection and purification. It is believed to absorb negative energy and help create a calm, balanced atmosphere around you. Many people place shungite near their computer or phone, or keep a piece in their pocket, as a personal shield during busy and stressful days.
