Shell Jasper

Physical Information

Despite its name, shell jasper is not a true jasper. It is a sedimentary stone, a fossil-rich limestone made mostly of calcite and the remains of ancient sea creatures. For this reason it is also sold as shell marble. It shows bold patterns in black, grey, brown and cream, often with round, curved or shell-shaped markings. These are the traces of shells and sediment that settled on an old sea floor and slowly hardened into stone.

Every piece carries a small piece of Earth's history. Because it is made mostly of calcite, shell jasper is fairly soft, with a hardness of around 3–4 on the Mohs scale. It polishes well and is used for palm stones, spheres and carvings. Protect it from scratches, keep it away from acids such as lemon juice or vinegar, and clean it with a soft, slightly damp cloth.

Shell jasper is known as a stone of grounding and stability. Its fossil layers are seen as a symbol of patience, strength and resilience built over a very long time. It is believed to help calm overthinking and support steady, practical decisions.

It is associated with the root chakra, which is linked to safety and feeling connected to the Earth. It is also seen as a gentle protective stone. Many people hold it during stressful days or keep it on a desk as a reminder to take things one step at a time.
