Serpentine
Physical Information
Serpentine is not one single mineral but a group of magnesium silicate minerals. It is usually light to dark green, often with black, yellow or white veins. Its mottled, marbled pattern reminded people of snake skin, which is how it got its name. Polished serpentine has a smooth, waxy or silky shine.
Serpentine is found in many countries around the world. Its hardness varies from about 2.5 to 5.5, so most pieces are fairly soft and can scratch easily. Because it looks similar to jade, it is sometimes sold as "new jade", but it is a different stone. It is popular for carvings, beads and palm stones. Store it away from harder crystals and clean it with a soft, dry cloth.
Metaphysical Properties
Serpentine is known as a stone of grounding and protection. It is believed to connect you with the rhythms of nature and to help release fear and tension. Many people use it to feel calm, balanced and safe.
It is associated with the heart chakra and with Kundalini energy, the spiritual energy thought to rest at the base of the spine. People use serpentine in meditation for inner growth and insight, and as a gentle support when they want to let go of old patterns and welcome change.
