Selenite
Physical Information
Selenite is a variety of gypsum, a calcium sulfate mineral. True selenite forms clear, flat, glassy crystals. Most "selenite" wands, towers, bowls and lamps in shops are actually satin spar, a fibrous form of gypsum with a silky, glowing shine. Both are gypsum and are used in the same way. Gypsum also forms the petal-like "desert rose" clusters found in sandy areas.
Gypsum is found in many countries, including Mexico and Morocco. It is one of the softest minerals, with a hardness of only 2 on the Mohs scale, so you can even scratch it with a fingernail.
Care Tips
Keep selenite dry. Water can slowly dissolve its surface, make it dull and damage fine edges, so never soak it or cleanse it in water or salt water. Dust it with a soft, dry cloth or brush, and handle it gently, because it breaks and scratches easily.
Metaphysical Properties
Selenite is known as a stone of purification. It is believed to clear stagnant energy, bring calm and create a peaceful, light atmosphere. Many people use a selenite plate or wand to cleanse and recharge their other crystals, and place pieces in the corners of a room to keep the space bright and harmonious.
