Sardonyx

Physical Information

Sardonyx is a banded variety of chalcedony, a fine-grained form of quartz. It is made of alternating layers of sard, a reddish-brown chalcedony, and onyx, which is white or black. These layers create bold stripes in red, orange, brown and white. It forms when silica-rich water fills cavities in rock and slowly deposits one thin layer after another.

Sardonyx is found in several countries, including India, Brazil and Uruguay. With a hardness of 6.5–7 on the Mohs scale, it is durable and easy to care for. Since ancient times it has been carved into seals, cameos and amulets, because the different coloured layers are perfect for relief carving.

Metaphysical Properties

Sardonyx is known as a stone of strength and protection. Its many layers are seen as a symbol of stability and staying steady in hard times. It is believed to support willpower, courage and self-discipline, especially when starting a new project or making an important decision.

It is associated with the root chakra and the sacral chakra, which are linked to grounding, confidence and healthy boundaries. Sardonyx is also traditionally connected to good fortune and to honest, respectful relationships. Many people carry it as a small talisman when they need focus and inner strength.
