Ruby – Zoisite (Anyolite)
Physical Information
Ruby Zoisite, also called Anyolite, is a natural rock made of bright green zoisite with red to pink crystals of ruby inside. Black streaks of amphibole (hornblende-type minerals) often add a third colour. The name Anyolite comes from a Maasai word for "green". It formed deep underground, where heat and pressure changed older rocks.
The best-known source is Tanzania. The rubies in this stone are usually opaque and not of gem quality, but the colour contrast makes it perfect for carvings, spheres and tumbled stones. Zoisite is softer than ruby, so the surface can feel slightly uneven after polishing. Clean it with a soft, damp cloth.
