Ruby
Physical Information
Ruby is the red variety of corundum, an aluminium oxide mineral. Small amounts of chromium give it its red colour, which ranges from pinkish red to deep red. The most valued shade is a glowing, pure red, often called "pigeon's blood". Ruby forms in metamorphic rocks such as marble and in some igneous rocks. Natural rubies often contain tiny inclusions, such as fine rutile needles called "silk".
Important sources include Myanmar, Mozambique, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Vietnam and Madagascar. With a hardness of 9 on the Mohs scale, ruby is one of the hardest gemstones, second only to diamond. Please note that most rubies on the market are heated to improve their colour and clarity. This is a common, accepted treatment. Opaque ruby, as used for tumbled stones and carvings, is usually untreated.
