Rhodochrosite
Physical Information
Rhodochrosite is a manganese carbonate mineral, and manganese is what gives it its rose-pink to raspberry-red colour. Its name comes from the Greek words for “rose” and “colour”. Massive rhodochrosite usually shows lovely pink and white bands, while rare transparent crystals can be a deep, glowing red.
Famous sources include Argentina, where it is known as the “Inca Rose” and is the national stone, as well as Peru, the USA (Colorado) and South Africa. It is a soft stone (3.5–4 on the Mohs scale), so protect it from knocks, scratches and household chemicals.
Metaphysical Properties
Rhodochrosite is known as a stone of self-love and compassion. It is believed to gently open the heart, help heal old emotional wounds and encourage a kinder, more loving relationship with yourself and others. Many people use it to bring back joy, warmth and playfulness.
It is associated with the heart and solar plexus chakras and is a beautiful stone for anyone learning to accept and express their feelings.
