Red Quartz

Physical Information

Red quartz is quartz coloured by natural inclusions of iron oxide, most often hematite. These inclusions give the crystal its red, rusty or reddish-brown colour. They can look like clouds, streaks or thin veils inside clear or milky quartz, or they can coat the surface of the crystal. Each piece is different, depending on how much iron was present while the crystal grew.

Like all quartz, red quartz has a glassy lustre and a hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale, so it is durable and easy to care for. Please note that bright, evenly red, very clear "red quartz" or "cherry quartz" beads are often man-made glass. Natural red quartz usually shows uneven colour and small inclusions.

Metaphysical Properties

Red quartz is known as a stone of vitality and strength. It is believed to combine the clear, amplifying energy of quartz with the grounding energy of hematite. Many people use it when they need more motivation, courage and determination, especially when they feel tired or stuck.

It is associated with the root chakra, which is linked to stability, safety and being present in the body. It is also said to support confidence and steady progress towards goals. Many people keep a piece nearby when starting something new, or hold it when they want to feel more grounded and focused.
