Red Amethyst
Physical Information
Red Amethyst is amethyst (purple quartz) that contains tiny inclusions of hematite, an iron oxide. The hematite gives the crystals red, burgundy or rusty tones. Often the red colour sits in the outer layer or near the tips of the crystals, so a piece can look deep purple inside and red on the surface.
One of the best-known sources is the Thunder Bay area in Ontario, Canada, where red-capped amethyst clusters are found. Similar material is also found in other places. Like all amethyst, it is hard (7 on the Mohs scale), but its purple colour can fade in strong sunlight, so keep it away from sunny windows.

Red Amethyst is known as a stone of grounded spirituality. It combines the calm, spiritual energy of amethyst with the steady, protective energy linked to hematite.
