Pyrite
Physical Information
Pyrite is an iron sulfide mineral with a bright, brassy-yellow metallic shine. It often grows in almost perfect cubes, but also in rounded clusters, flat "suns" and mixed masses. Because of its golden colour it is known as fool's gold, and many people in the past mistook it for real gold. Its name comes from the Greek word for fire, because it gives off sparks when struck against steel.
Pyrite is found worldwide. Famous cubic crystals come from Spain, and fine clusters come from Peru. It has a hardness of about 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale. Keep pyrite dry and away from humidity, because moisture can make it tarnish or slowly break down. Clean it with a dry cloth only.
Metaphysical Properties
Pyrite is known as a stone of abundance. It is believed to support confidence, willpower and a positive, practical attitude. Many people use it when they are starting a business, working towards a goal or wanting to feel more motivated. It is also seen as a protective stone that helps people stand their ground.
It is associated with the solar plexus chakra, which is linked to self-confidence and personal power. Many people keep a pyrite cube or cluster on their desk, near the cash register or in their workspace as a symbol of success. It is also a popular stone to carry before an important meeting or exam.
