Picture Jasper
Physical Information
Picture jasper is a variety of jasper, a fine-grained, opaque form of quartz. It is famous for its landscape patterns. Its markings often look like deserts, hills, trees or distant horizons, as if a small painting were hidden inside the stone. These pictures come from mineral impurities, mainly iron oxides, and from fine layers of sediment laid down over a very long time.
Its colours are warm and earthy: brown, tan, beige, cream and soft red. Polished, it has a smooth, silky surface. With a hardness of about 6.5–7 on the Mohs scale, it is durable and easy to care for. It is used for palm stones, spheres, beads and cabochons. A soft cloth and mild soapy water are all it needs.

Picture jasper is known as a stone of grounding and a deep connection to the Earth. It is believed to bring calm, balance emotions and give a feeling of safety and belonging. Many people use it for quiet reflection and mindfulness, or when they want to see a situation from a wider view.
