Picasso Jasper

Physical Information

Despite its name, Picasso jasper is not a true jasper. It is a metamorphic stone, a limestone that has been changed by heat and pressure into a kind of marble. For this reason it is also sold as Picasso marble or Picasso stone. Its bold black, grey, brown and rust lines cross a white or cream background. The patterns look like brushstrokes, which is how the stone got its artistic name.

It is mostly associated with Utah in the United States. Because it is a marble, it is much softer than real jasper, with a hardness of around 3–4 on the Mohs scale. Protect it from scratches and knocks, keep it away from acids such as lemon juice or vinegar, and clean it with a soft, slightly damp cloth.

Metaphysical Properties

Picasso jasper is known as a stone of creativity. It is believed to help people move past creative blocks and see things in a fresh, playful way. Many artists, writers and makers keep a piece nearby while they work, as a reminder to trust their own ideas.

With its earthy colours, it is associated with the root chakra and with grounding and stability. It is also linked to transformation and new beginnings. Many people use it during times of change, when they want to let go of old habits and feel calm, steady and open to what comes next.
