Physical Information

The stone sold as Pakistan onyx is not true onyx. True onyx is a banded form of chalcedony (quartz). Pakistan onyx is a banded carbonate stone, mostly calcite, and is also known as onyx marble. It forms in layers from mineral-rich water, which creates its soft wavy bands. Typical colours are light green, honey, cream and white, and thin pieces glow beautifully when light shines through them.

As its name says, it comes mainly from Pakistan, where it is carved into bowls, eggs, spheres and figures. It is a soft stone, with a hardness of about 3 on the Mohs scale, so it scratches easily. Keep it away from acids such as lemon juice or vinegar, and clean it only with a soft, dry or slightly damp cloth.
