Olivine / Peridot

Physical Information

Olivine is a silicate mineral rich in magnesium and iron. It is one of the most common minerals in the Earth's upper mantle and in dark volcanic rocks such as basalt. When the crystals are clear and of gem quality, the stone is called peridot. Its colour ranges from yellowish green to deep olive green. The more iron it contains, the deeper the green. It has a glassy lustre and is often faceted for jewellery.

Peridot comes from several countries, including Pakistan, Myanmar, Egypt and the United States. Olivine is also found in some meteorites, called pallasites, which gives it a special link to space. With a hardness of 6.5–7 on the Mohs scale, it is fairly durable, but it can still scratch. Store it apart from harder stones and clean it with mild soapy water.

Metaphysical Properties

Olivine is known as a stone of renewal and positive change. It is believed to lift the mood, ease jealousy and self-doubt, and help people let go of old burdens. Many people also see it as a stone of abundance and use it when they want to invite growth, success and good fortune into their lives.

With its fresh green colour, olivine is associated with the heart chakra. It is linked to love, forgiveness and emotional balance. Many people keep it close during times of change, or hold it in meditation when they want to feel lighter, calmer and more open to new beginnings.
