Obsidian
Physical Information
Obsidian is a natural volcanic glass. It forms when lava cools so quickly that crystals have no time to grow. Most obsidian is glossy black, but it can also be brown or grey. Tiny inclusions and gas bubbles can create a golden or rainbow sheen, and small white crystal clusters create "snowflake" obsidian.
Obsidian is found in volcanic regions around the world, including Mexico, the USA and Iceland. When it breaks, it forms very sharp edges, so people have used it for blades and tools for thousands of years. It is fairly soft (about 5–5.5 on the Mohs scale) and can chip, so store it carefully and handle broken pieces with care.
Metaphysical Properties
Obsidian is known as a stone of protection. Its deep black colour and mirror-like shine are believed to help people see themselves honestly and let go of what no longer serves them. Many people use it to feel shielded from negativity.
It is associated with the root chakra and with grounding. People often keep it near the front door, on a desk or in their pocket when they want to feel safe, strong and steady. It is also used in meditation for deep reflection and emotional release.
