Moonstone

Physical Information

Moonstone is a member of the feldspar family. Its famous soft glow is called adularescence. It happens when light scatters between very thin layers of two different feldspars inside the stone, creating a floating, moon-like sheen. The body colour can be white, cream, peach or grey, and the sheen is often white or blue.

"Rainbow moonstone" is closely related, but it is technically a white form of labradorite, which shows blue and rainbow flashes. Moonstone is found in Sri Lanka, India and other countries. It has a hardness of 6 to 6.5 but can split along its cleavage, so protect it from hard knocks. Clean it with lukewarm water and a soft cloth.

Metaphysical Properties

Moonstone is known as a stone of new beginnings and intuition. It is believed to calm emotions, bring balance and help you trust your inner voice. Because of its link to the moon and its cycles, many people connect it with feminine energy and nurturing.

It is associated with the third eye chakra and the crown chakra. People use it in meditation and dream work, and traditionally it was carried as a protective stone for travellers, especially at night or over water. Many also wear moonstone to invite love, harmony and compassion.
