Moldavite
Physical Information
Moldavite is a natural green glass (tektite) formed around 15 million years ago, when a large meteorite struck the Earth in what is today southern Germany (the Ries crater). The enormous heat of the impact melted the local rock, which was thrown into the air and cooled into small pieces of glass that fell across Central Europe.
Most Moldavite is found in the Czech Republic, especially in South Bohemia and Moravia. Its name comes from the Vltava river (in German: Moldau). Moldavite ranges from light to deep bottle-green and usually has a sculpted, wrinkled surface. Held up to the light, it often shows tiny gas bubbles and swirl-like inclusions. Because the deposits are limited and no new Moldavite is being formed, it is one of the rarest stones in our collection.
Metaphysical Properties
Moldavite is known as a stone of transformation. Born from the meeting of a star and the Earth, it is believed to speed up personal change, help release old patterns and open the way for new beginnings. Many people use it during meditation or at turning points in their life, when they feel ready for a new chapter.
It is most often associated with the heart and third-eye chakras. Moldavite is said to carry a strong, fast energy – some people feel warmth or tingling when they first hold it, often called the “Moldavite flush”. If you are new to it, start by wearing it for short periods and pairing it with a grounding stone such as Smoky Quartz, Hematite or Black Tourmaline.
How to Recognise Real Moldavite
Because Moldavite is rare and popular, many green glass imitations are sold. Real Moldavite is never perfectly clear or bright neon green, and it rarely has a smooth, even surface. Look for a natural, soft green colour, small bubbles and a textured surface. Every Moldavite we sell is hand-picked and checked in our Budapest shop.
