Malachite
Physical Information
Malachite is a copper carbonate mineral. It is famous for its rich green colour and its bands and swirls in light and dark green, which form as the mineral grows layer by layer. It forms near the surface of copper deposits, where water slowly changes the copper minerals over time.
Important sources include the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Zambia, Russia and Australia. In the past, ground malachite was used as a green pigment for paint and cosmetics. It has a hardness of only 3.5 to 4, so it is a soft stone.
Metaphysical Properties
Malachite is known as a stone of transformation. It is believed to help you move through change, break old patterns and grow. Many people use it to absorb negative energy and for protection, and to find the courage to face their fears.
It is associated with the heart chakra, and people use it to support emotional balance, compassion and openness. Some also link it with abundance and success in new projects. Many keep a piece nearby during times of big life changes.
Care Tips
Malachite is soft and sensitive to water, acids, salt and household cleaners. Wipe it with a soft, dry cloth and do not soak it. Polished malachite is safe to handle, but do not cut, sand or grind raw malachite at home, as the dust should not be breathed in.
