Libyan Desert Glass
Physical Information
Libyan Desert Glass is a natural glass made of almost pure silica (about 98%). It is found in the Great Sand Sea of western Egypt, close to the Libyan border. Its colour ranges from pale lemon-yellow to golden and green-yellow, and it often contains small bubbles and cloudy swirls.
It formed about 29 million years ago, when the desert sand was melted by extreme heat. Scientists believe this was caused by a meteorite impact or the explosion of a comet or asteroid in the air. It was already valued in ancient Egypt: the golden scarab in one of Tutankhamun's pectorals is carved from Libyan Desert Glass.

Libyan Desert Glass is known as a stone of personal power. Formed by a cosmic event and the heat of the sun-soaked desert, it is believed to strengthen confidence, willpower and clarity of purpose, and to help turn intentions into reality.
