Larvikite

Physical Information

Larvikite is an igneous rock, a type of monzonite, made mostly of feldspar crystals. It is dark grey to black, and when you turn it in the light, the large crystals flash with silver-blue colour. This play of light is similar to labradorite and comes from the same kind of effect inside the feldspar.

Larvikite is named after the town of Larvik in southern Norway, where it is quarried. It is hard (about 6) and polishes beautifully, so it is used as building stone and for worktops as well as for jewellery and carvings. It is easy to care for; clean it with a soft, damp cloth.

Metaphysical Properties

Larvikite is known as a stone of grounding and protection. It is believed to calm a busy mind, support patience and help people stay focused. Many people use it when they feel scattered or overwhelmed and want to feel steady again.

It is associated with the root chakra and the third eye chakra, linking stability with intuition. People like to hold larvikite in meditation, keep it by the bed or wear it on busy days when they want to feel calm, protected and clear-headed.
