Larimar

Physical Information

Larimar is a rare blue variety of the mineral pectolite. It is known only from the Dominican Republic in the Caribbean. Its light to deep sky-blue colour, with white and sometimes greenish swirls, looks like sunlight on shallow sea water. The blue colour is linked to traces of copper, and the deeper the blue, the more valuable the stone.

Larimar forms in cavities of volcanic rock. The name joins "Lari", from Larissa, the daughter of the man who made the stone known, and "mar", the Spanish word for sea. With a hardness of about 4.5 to 5, it is softer than many gemstones. Protect it from scratches, and keep it away from strong sunlight and heat, which can fade its colour.

Metaphysical Properties

Larimar is known as a stone of tranquillity. It is believed to calm the mind, soothe strong emotions and bring a relaxed, peaceful feeling, like a day by the sea. Many people link it with the element of water, the Divine Feminine and gentle, nurturing energy.

It is associated with the throat chakra, and people use it to speak their truth calmly and clearly. Some call it the "Atlantis Stone" and connect it with ancient wisdom. Many wear larimar to invite joy, creativity and a lighter heart into everyday life.
