Lake Superior Agate
Physical Information
Lake Superior Agate is a banded agate, a type of chalcedony (fine-grained quartz). It is famous for its rich red, orange, brown and white bands. The warm colours come from iron. It formed about a billion years ago, when gas bubbles in lava flows slowly filled with mineral-rich water and layer after layer of silica built up inside.
Later, glaciers carried the stones across the region. Today they are found around Lake Superior in the United States, especially in Minnesota, where it is the official state gemstone. It has a hardness of about 6.5 to 7, so it is durable for jewellery and display. Many collectors love to find their own on beaches and in gravel pits.
Metaphysical Properties
Lake Superior Agate is known as a stone of grounding and stability. It is believed to bring a sense of security and calm and to help release stress, anger and tension. Many people use it for protection against negative energy.
With its warm, earthy colours, it is associated with the root chakra and the sacral chakra. People use it to support motivation, endurance and creativity, and its flowing bands are said to inspire new ideas. It is a lovely stone for anyone who feels a connection to lakes, water and wild places.
