Labradorite
Physical Information
Labradorite is a feldspar mineral famous for its play of colour, called labradorescence. When light hits the stone at the right angle, flashes of blue, green, gold and sometimes orange or purple appear. The base colour is usually dark grey to black. The flashes are caused by very thin layers inside the stone, which reflect light in different colours.
Labradorite forms in igneous rocks. It is named after Labrador in Canada, and it is also found in places such as Madagascar and Finland. It is of medium hardness (about 6–6.5 on the Mohs scale), so avoid knocks and scratches. Turn the stone slowly in the light to find its best flash.
Metaphysical Properties
Labradorite is known as a stone of transformation. Its hidden colours, which only appear in the right light, are seen as a symbol of hidden talents and inner magic. It is believed to support intuition and to protect your energy in busy or draining places. Many people use it during times of change.
It is associated with the third eye chakra and the crown chakra. People often use it in meditation, keep it close when they need creativity and courage, or carry it as a protective stone. It is especially popular with sensitive people who want to stay calm and centred.
