Kyanite
Physical Information
Kyanite is an aluminium silicate mineral. It is best known for its vivid blue colour, often with lighter streaks, but it can also be green, black, grey, orange or almost colourless. It grows in long, flat, blade-like crystals with a glassy to pearly shine.
Kyanite forms under high pressure when aluminium-rich rocks are changed deep in the Earth, often together with quartz and garnet. It is found in several countries, including Brazil and India. A special feature is that its hardness depends on direction: about 4.5 to 5 along the blade, and 6.5 to 7 across it. The blades split easily, so handle them gently and avoid knocks.
Metaphysical Properties
Kyanite is known as a stone of alignment. It is believed to help balance all the chakras and to bring calm and mental clarity. Many people also say it does not hold on to negative energy, so it does not need regular cleansing.
Blue kyanite is associated with the throat chakra and the third eye chakra. People use it to support clear, honest communication, intuition and meditation. Some keep a blade near the bed to encourage restful sleep and dream work. Black kyanite is used for grounding, and green kyanite for emotional balance.
