Howlite

Physical Information

Howlite is a calcium borosilicate mineral. It is usually white or light grey with fine grey to black veins, which give it a soft, marble-like look. It forms in evaporite deposits, where mineral-rich water slowly dries out. The mineral was named after Henry How, a Canadian scientist who first described it in the 19th century.

Howlite is soft (about 3.5 on the Mohs scale) and porous, so it takes dye very easily. For this reason it is often dyed blue to imitate turquoise, or in other bright colours. Natural howlite is always white to grey. Main sources include the United States and Canada. Keep it away from harsh chemicals and scratches.

Metaphysical Properties

Howlite is known as a stone of calm. It is believed to quiet a busy mind and to help ease feelings of stress and impatience. Many people use it when they want to slow down, think more clearly and respond to others with more patience.

It is associated with the crown chakra, which is linked to awareness and inner peace. Many people keep a piece on the bedside table or under the pillow for a more peaceful evening routine. It is also a popular choice for meditation and journaling, and for anyone who wants a gentle, soothing stone to carry every day.
