Heliotrope
Physical Information
Heliotrope, also known as Bloodstone, is a variety of chalcedony, a fine-grained form of quartz. It has a deep green base with red or brownish-red spots. The green comes from minerals such as chlorite, and the red spots come from iron oxides like hematite. The colour ranges from almost black-green to lighter green, and the red can appear as dots, streaks or blotches.
Heliotrope has a hardness of about 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale, so it is durable for jewellery and carvings. The name comes from Greek and means "sun turner". It has a long history as a talisman. An old legend says it formed when drops of Christ's blood fell on the green earth at the crucifixion.
Metaphysical Properties
