Gagate

Physical Information

Gagate (Gagat in German, gagát in Hungarian) is another name for jet. Jet is not a mineral but an organic gemstone. It is fossilised wood from ancient trees that was buried and pressed under the ground for millions of years. It is deep black, light in weight and takes a soft, velvety shine when polished. It feels warm to the touch.

The most famous jet comes from Whitby in England, where it was carved into jewellery for centuries. In the Victorian era, jet jewellery was widely worn during mourning. Jet is soft (about 2.5–4 on the Mohs scale), so protect it from scratches and knocks and clean it with a soft, dry cloth. Black glass and plastic are sometimes sold as jet; real jet is lighter and warmer to the touch.

Metaphysical Properties

Jet is known as a stone of protection. For centuries it has been worn as an amulet against negative energy. It is believed to offer comfort and emotional support during grief, loss and times of change.

It is associated with the root chakra and with grounding. People often wear jet as a pendant, carry it while travelling, or keep it close during difficult times to feel steady, safe and held.
