Flint

Physical Information

Flint is a hard, fine-grained form of quartz (microcrystalline silica). It is usually dark grey, black or brown, sometimes with a white chalky crust on the outside. When it breaks, it forms smooth, curved surfaces and very sharp edges. This is called a conchoidal fracture.

Flint forms as nodules and layers inside chalk and limestone, where silica slowly collected over a very long time. It is common in the chalk regions of Europe. For thousands of years, people used flint to make tools, arrowheads and knives, and to make sparks for fire. It is hard (about 7 on the Mohs scale) and easy to care for.

Metaphysical Properties

Flint is known as a stone of the ancestors. Because it helped early people survive, it is believed to connect us with ancient wisdom and with the strength of those who came before us. Many people use it to feel grounded, stable and protected.

It is associated with the root chakra. People often keep a piece of flint at home as a protection stone, hold it during grounding meditation, or carry it when they need to cut through confusion and focus on what really matters.
