Fire Agate

Physical Information

Fire agate is a brown variety of chalcedony that shows flashes of red, orange, gold and green, sometimes with touches of blue and violet. This “fire” comes from very thin layers of iron oxide inside the stone. The layers bend the light and create a rainbow-like play of colour, called iridescence.

Fire agate forms in volcanic areas and is found mainly in Mexico and the south-western United States. Each stone must be carefully hand-polished to show the fire without cutting away the thin coloured layers, so good pieces are quite rare. It is hard (about 6.5–7 on the Mohs scale) and easy to care for.

Metaphysical Properties

Fire agate is known as a stone of courage. Its fiery colours are believed to bring warmth, motivation and passion for life. Many people use it when they need energy to start something new or want to feel braver and more protected.

It is associated with the root chakra and the sacral chakra. People often wear it as a ring or pendant, or keep it close during creative work to feel inspired and grounded at the same time.
