Emerald
Physical Information
Emerald is the green variety of the mineral beryl. Its rich green colour comes from small amounts of chromium and vanadium. With a hardness of 7.5–8 on the Mohs scale it is fairly hard, but most emeralds contain natural inclusions, which jewellers call the “jardin” (French for garden). These inclusions are a sign of a natural stone and make each piece unique.
The most famous emeralds come from Colombia, while Zambia and Brazil are also important sources. Raw and bead-quality emeralds are often more opaque than faceted gems, but they carry the same beautiful green. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners and strong heat – a soft cloth and lukewarm water are enough.
Metaphysical Properties
Emerald is known as the “Stone of Successful Love”. It is believed to support loyalty, harmony and partnership, and to bring patience, wisdom and a sense of abundance. It is the traditional birthstone of May.
Emerald is associated with the heart chakra. Many people wear it to open their heart, heal relationships and invite more love and gratitude into daily life.
