Cradle of Humankind

The Cradle of Humankind is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in South Africa, famous for its limestone caves and some of the oldest early human fossils ever found. "Cradle of Humankind" is the name of the place, not of a mineral. Stones sold under this name are said to come from this wider region.

Most of them are a silicified rock: an old sediment that was slowly hardened by silica, giving it a jasper-like look. The colours are earthy, with shades of brown, red, beige and cream, often in layers or patches. The stone is hard and durable and needs little care. Simply wipe it with a soft cloth.
