Cinnabar Quartz
Physical Information
Cinnabar quartz is quartz that contains bright red cinnabar. Cinnabar is a mercury sulphide mineral and has been used for centuries as the red pigment vermilion. In cinnabar quartz, the red cinnabar appears as spots, patches or coatings inside or on the clear to white quartz, giving a strong red and white contrast.
Both minerals form together in hydrothermal veins, from hot mineral-rich water. Because cinnabar contains mercury, handle it with care: do not put it in water or drinking water, do not cut or sand it at home, and wash your hands after handling rough pieces. Some red stones sold as “cinnabar” are dyed or man-made, so ask about the material.
Metaphysical Properties
Cinnabar quartz is known as a stone of abundance. In many traditions, red cinnabar is linked with luck, success and prosperity. It is believed to support confidence and a positive attitude towards money and work.
It is associated with the root chakra and the sacral chakra. People often place a piece in their shop, office or workspace, or keep it in a display case as a symbol of good fortune and new opportunities.
