Chrysoprase

Physical Information

Chrysoprase is an apple-green variety of chalcedony, a microcrystalline quartz. Its fresh colour comes from small amounts of nickel. It is translucent to opaque, with a smooth, waxy shine. The most valued pieces are an even, bright apple green.

Australia is the best-known source of fine chrysoprase; it is also found in Brazil, Tanzania and Poland. It has a hardness of about 6.5–7. Its colour can fade with long exposure to strong sunlight or heat, so keep it out of direct sun. Some green chalcedony on the market is dyed to imitate chrysoprase.

Chrysoprase is known as a stone of joy and new beginnings. It is believed to lift the heart, encourage optimism and help people let go of old hurts. Many people use it to feel more positive, forgiving and open to life.

It is associated with the heart chakra. People like to wear chrysoprase or keep it close during times of change, when they want to feel hopeful, trusting and kind towards themselves. Its fresh green colour is often linked to growth and renewal.
