Chiastolite

Physical Information

Chiastolite is a special variety of the mineral andalusite. When a crystal is cut across, it shows a dark cross or “X” shape on a lighter brown, grey or beige background. The cross forms because dark carbon (graphite) particles gather in a regular pattern while the crystal grows. Because of this pattern, it is also called “cross stone”.

Chiastolite forms in metamorphic rocks such as slate and schist, which changed under heat and pressure. It is found in several countries, including China, Spain and Australia. It is fairly hard, but polished slices can chip at the edges, so store them carefully.

Metaphysical Properties

Chiastolite is known as a stone of protection. For centuries its natural cross has been seen as a symbol of faith and balance. It is believed to help people stay calm and steady during changes and difficult choices.

It is associated with the root chakra and with grounding. Many people carry it as a travel or protection amulet, keep it by the front door, or hold it when they need to feel safe and centred.
