Carnelian

Physical Information

Carnelian is an orange to red variety of chalcedony, a form of quartz made of tiny crystals. Its warm colour comes from iron oxides. Stones can be clear orange, deep red-brown, or show soft bands and cloudy patches. It forms when silica-rich water fills cavities in rock and slowly hardens.

Important sources include India, Brazil and Uruguay. Carnelian is hard, about 7 on the Mohs scale, and easy to care for. Please note that much carnelian on the market is heat-treated or dyed agate, which gives a very even, bright colour. Natural stones usually show a softer, more uneven colour. It has been used for seals, beads and amulets since ancient times.

Metaphysical Properties

Carnelian is known as a stone of motivation and courage. It is believed to bring warmth, energy and creative drive. Many people use it when starting a new project, before an exam or presentation, or when they need a push to take action. In the past it was worn as a symbol of courage and good fortune.

It is associated with the sacral chakra, which is linked to creativity and joy. Many people wear carnelian as jewellery or keep a tumbled stone in a pocket on busy days. It is also a popular stone for artists, writers and anyone who wants to feel more confident and alive.
