Calcite

Physical Information

Calcite is a calcium carbonate mineral and one of the most common minerals on Earth. It is the main part of limestone and marble, and it also forms beautiful crystals in caves and rock cavities. Calcite comes in many colours, including white, honey, orange, green, blue and pink, depending on small traces of other elements. Clear calcite, known as Optical Calcite, shows double refraction: a line seen through it looks doubled.

Calcite is found worldwide, with popular coloured varieties from Mexico and Brazil. It is soft, about 3 on the Mohs scale, and it breaks easily along flat planes into rhombus shapes. Keep it away from acids such as vinegar or lemon juice, do not soak it in water, and store it apart from harder stones.

Metaphysical Properties

Calcite is known as a stone of cleansing and flow. It is believed to clear stuck energy, lift the mood and bring a fresh, light feeling. Many people use it when they want to learn something new, start a new chapter or bring more calm and clarity into their home.

Each colour is linked to a different chakra. For example, orange calcite is associated with the sacral chakra, green calcite with the heart chakra and blue calcite with the throat chakra. Many people keep calcite in a room where they study or work, place it on a windowsill, or hold it during meditation.
