Blue Agate
Physical Information
Blue Agate is a blue variety of agate, a banded form of chalcedony made of tiny quartz crystals. Natural blue agate usually shows soft grey-blue to pale sky-blue colours, often with fine white or light bands. One well-known natural variety is Blue Lace Agate, with delicate lace-like bands. Agate forms in cavities in volcanic rock, where silica-rich water fills the space layer by layer.
Please note that bright, deep or electric blue agate is almost always dyed. Agate takes dye very easily, so many slices and beads are coloured this way. Dyed agate can still be beautiful, but its colour is not natural. Agate is hard and durable, about 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale. Keep dyed pieces away from strong sunlight, as the colour can fade.
Metaphysical Properties
Blue Agate is known as a stone of calm. It is believed to soothe the mind, ease tension and bring a peaceful, gentle mood. Many people use it when they want to relax, speak more calmly or find the right words in a difficult conversation.
It is associated with the throat chakra, which is linked to communication and self-expression. Many people wear blue agate as jewellery, keep it on a desk, or hold it during meditation. It is also a popular stone for teachers, speakers and anyone who wants to express themselves with more ease.
