Black Garnet

1 min read

Physical Information

Black Garnet is also called melanite. It is a black to very dark brown variety of andradite, a member of the garnet family. Its dark colour comes from titanium and iron. Melanite is opaque and has a bright, glassy to almost metallic shine. It often forms small, well-shaped crystals with many faces.

It forms in certain volcanic rocks and in metamorphic rocks, where minerals change under heat and pressure. With a hardness of about 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale, it is durable enough for jewellery. It is less common in jewellery than red garnet, which makes it a special choice for collectors.

Metaphysical Properties

Black Garnet is known as a stone of protection. It is believed to bring strength, stability and a steady feeling of safety. Many people use it when they want to feel more grounded, set healthy boundaries or find inner strength during difficult times.

It is associated with the root chakra, which is linked to stability and a sense of security. Many people wear black garnet as jewellery, carry a small crystal in a pocket, or place it near the front door as a symbol of protection. Like other garnets, it is also linked to commitment and loyalty.
