Bismuth

Physical Information

Bismuth is a heavy, silvery metal. The colourful bismuth crystals you see in shops are not mined in this form. They are grown by people: pure bismuth is melted and then cooled slowly, and the metal forms stepped, square spiral shapes called hopper crystals. Natural bismuth crystals are rare and look quite different.

The rainbow colours of pink, gold, blue and green come from a very thin layer of oxide that forms on the surface as the hot metal meets air. Light reflecting from this thin layer creates the colours. Bismuth is soft and brittle, so handle it gently. Keep it dry and do not use it in drinking water.

Metaphysical Properties

Bismuth is known as a stone of transformation. Its stair-step shape is often seen as a symbol of growth, step by step. It is believed to bring calm during change and to help people feel less alone in new situations. Many people also enjoy it as a symbol of creativity and connection.

It is associated with the crown chakra, and its rainbow colours are said to link it with all the chakras. Many people place a bismuth crystal on a desk or shelf, where its colours catch the light, or use it as a focus point during meditation. It is also a fun gift for anyone who loves unusual shapes and science.
