Aragonite

Physical Information

Aragonite is a calcium carbonate mineral. It has the same chemical make-up as calcite, but its crystals are built in a different way. It is best known for its star-shaped clusters, often called "sputnik" aragonite, in warm brown, orange and honey tones. It also forms white, blue or yellow crusts and branching shapes, and it is the main material in many sea shells and in pearls.

The name comes from Aragon in Spain, where it was first described. Popular star clusters come from Morocco. Aragonite is soft, about 3.5 to 4 on the Mohs scale, so handle it with care. Do not soak it in water, and keep it away from acids such as vinegar or lemon juice.

Metaphysical Properties

Aragonite is known as a stone of patience and grounding. It is believed to bring calm and stability, especially during stressful or busy times. Many people use it when they want to slow down, accept what they cannot change, and let go of anger or frustration.

It is associated with the root chakra, which is linked to stability and a sense of safety. Many people place an aragonite cluster in the living room or at work to create a calm, balanced atmosphere. It is also used during meditation to feel more centred and connected with the earth.
