Amethyst
Physical Information
Amethyst is the purple variety of quartz. Its colour comes from tiny amounts of iron in the crystal, activated by natural radiation in the Earth. The shades range from pale lavender to deep violet. Amethyst often grows as clusters, geodes and single points with a glassy shine.
Important sources include Brazil, Uruguay, Zambia, Madagascar and Mexico. Amethyst is hard (7 on the Mohs scale) and easy to care for, but its colour can fade in strong sunlight over time. Keep it away from sunny windows and clean it with water and a soft brush.
Metaphysical Properties
Amethyst is known as a stone of calm and one of the most loved crystals in the world. In ancient Greece, it was linked with a clear, sober mind. Today, it is believed to quiet a busy mind, ease stress and bring a sense of peace. Many people use it in meditation.
It is associated with the crown chakra and the third eye chakra, and with intuition and spiritual growth. People often keep it on the bedside table for a peaceful evening routine, or in a living room or meditation corner to create a calm atmosphere. It is also a popular protective stone.
